INFORMATION BULLETIN

Individuals who are considering becoming a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada, and whose first language is not English, may be interested in participating in the Communication and Professional Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists (CPP for MLTs) Course.

The CPP for MLTs Course is endorsed by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM), the regulator for MLTs in Manitoba. The CPP for MLTs course provides training in language, culture and communication related to working as an MLT in Canada. This course also helps students to build language skills that IE MLTs find useful when working to demonstrate language proficiency for practice as an MLT in Manitoba. This course is designed for MLTs who were educated outside of Canada, and may speak English as a second or additional language. This is a non-credit course and is offered at no cost to participants undergoing the PLA process in Canada.

The CPP for MLTs Course is 120 hours over 12 weeks, in a ‘blended’ delivery model, which includes 6 hours of face-to-face (F2F) classes plus 4 hours online component each week.

  • The F2F classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Language Training Centre, 123 Main Street, Winnipeg.
  • The online component is completed by students on their own outside of the F2F classes.
  • The Course will run from February 4, 2020 – April 30, 2020. (NOTE: Application deadline: January 6th, 2020).

If you are interested in attending this course, go to the website, www.rrc.ca/cppmlt to find out more information and to download the application package.

Please note: The CPP for MLTs course is a pre-requisite for eligible candidates applying to the Manitoba IEMLT Bridging Program: https://sharedhealthmb.ca/services/diagnostic/educ..., however successful completion of the CCPP for MLTs course does not guarantee entrance into the Manitoba IEMLT Bridging Program. It is also helpful for students entering the MLS program at Red River College and to those already practising as MLTs or MLAs who feel they need to build their communication skills for working as in Canada.

Testimonials from past CPP for MLTs Course participants:

“I can say that CPP for MLTs was very helpful. It really helped me to improve my communication. It taught me how to be assertive, especially most of us (internationally educated) [who get] intimidated at work since English is not our first language. The feedback that we received was very helpful.”

“Twice a week is very reasonable especially when we are all working students and have families at the same time.”

“In my opinion, the combination of the F2F and online classes are effective tools for students, especially for internationally educated graduates, to learn this course. The approach was not stressful like what you felt when you were studying in school. The online classes tells you about the topics being discussed while the F2F is more on the explanation part which makes you understand better the lessons. That is why they go hand in hand.”
